McDermott, the company's chief merchandising officer, is being promoted to the job of chief customer officer, where he will be "responsible for creating experiences that best serve customers and differentiate Lowe's in an omni-channel environment, including leading customer insights, customer experience design, marketing and strategy."

Is there a more important role in a retail business than that of chief customer officer? And is there an excuse for being a retailer and not having such a person? Just asking...
