business news in context, analysis with attitude

McDonald’s, apparently emboldened by Starbucks’ success in Japan – where it currently has 700 stores and saw sales grow 16 percent last year – has decided to bring its McCafe concept to that nation.

The company said it will test 15 McCafe stores in the Tokyo area, beginning August 29. If the concept works, it will roll out the concept throughout the country next year.
KC's View:
When Mrs. Content Guy saw a McCafe on the Champs Elysees last week, she was intrigued by the concept and wondered why they haven’t come to the US.

Now, I wouldn’t be likely to buy my coffee at a McCafe, at least not if there were a Starbucks anywhere in a 10-mile radius. But I was intrigued by the fact that she saw the McCafes – offering a broader and more upscale selection of snacks than usually offered by Mickey D’s – as attractive.
