business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Los Angeles Times reports that contract talks between the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) and Southern California’s three major grocery chains – Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons – are scheduled to resume this week, taking place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The talks broke down last week, but pressure on the two sides to return to the table ramped up when the unionized employees voted overwhelmingly last weekend to authorize a strike.

The last three-year contract, reached after an extended strike/lockout, expired in March but has been kept alive through a series of extensions.
