business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Detroit News this morning reports that “Kroger will begin a hiring spree today to add 3,000 workers to its Michigan staff, a move that analysts see as a precursor to the grocer acquiring as many as 25 soon-to-be closed Farmer Jack stores.

“Officials at Cincinnati-based Kroger, are remaining mum on the prospect of taking over Farmer Jack locations, saying the jobs are being added at existing stores in response to the uptick in business the company anticipates as its one-time chief Detroit rival shuts down.”

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P) has announced that it will sell or close its Farmer Jack stores by early next month, and much speculation has focused on Kroger’s interest in some of the locations – though Kroger has said that the speculation is just that.
