business news in context, analysis with attitude

Seventy years ago – and we must admit that we didn’t know this – the first Twinkies manufactured by the Hostess Co. actually had banana crème filling…and it was only during World War II, because of a banana shortage, that it was replaced by the now-familiar vanilla crème

Well, apparently the banana shortage is over, because the manufacturer has decided to return to its roots and make a new version of the Twinkie with the old-style banana crème – and while it has done so on a temporary promotional basis in the past, this time it plans for it to be a permanent addition to its product lineup.

The fruit flavor, however, doesn’t exactly make the Twinkie a health food – there is almost no nutritional difference between the old-style and new-style Twinkie.
KC's View:
We learn something every day. Who knew there was a banana shortage during World War II?

Wouldn’t it be interesting, by the way, if scientists found out that people who ate banana crème Twinkies actually lived on average five years longer than people who ate bananas?
