• The Wall Street Journal this morning reports that Westfarmers, the Australian home improvement chain, is prepared to increase its previous bid to acquire the Coles Group there – at least in part to prevent other players from making successful bids for the Australia’s second largest retailer..

Among the companies considered likely or probable suitors would be Tesco, private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), and Woolworths, Australia’s biggest retailer, which could launch a joint bid with another company in order to land some of Coles’ non-competitive chains.

Wine Spectator reports on a new study done in Finland revealing – not surprisingly – that “wine drinkers are healthier than drinkers of beer and spirits,” and that “moderate consumption of wine may contribute to a better, longer life. Over the course of the nearly three-decade study, wine drinkers had a lower mortality rate than drinkers of other alcoholic beverages.”

• The Orlando Sentinel reports that Publix Super Markets has pledged that all its private label milk products will be free of bioengineered hormones, including without rbST or recombinant bovine somatotropin, a hormone used to increase a cow's milk production.
