business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Florida Times-Union reports on Winn-Dixie’s efforts to revitalize the chain through store remodels that it hopes will revitalize the company. Six stores have been remodeled, with a total of 15 due to be revamped by the end of the year.

Among the solutions being tested by the company: an edited grocery selection keyed to movement, expanded perishables and improved meal solutions offerings.
KC's View:
The problem, of course, is that Winn-Dixie has more than 500 stores, so it is hard to see how 15 renovations are going to move the needle. After all, at this rate, it’ll take until 2040 to get the whole chain done.

Okay, so maybe things will move faster if the first batch of stores works out. And maybe it is unfair of us to criticize, seeing as we haven’t been in any of the newly remodeled stores to make an informed judgment. That said, we’re not persuaded – mostly because it doesn’t seem like the company has reached any sort of paradigm-shifting conclusions about its reason for being.
