business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Target Corp. plans to expand its store count by 500 units in the US by 2012, with the expectation that it will have 2,000 stores by that time.

However, Target CEO Robert Ulrich told an analysts’ meeting that while the company remains focused on expanding in the US, eventually it will find its way to other countries. "Eventually, yes, we will be there," he said.

Ulrich said that a Canadian acquisition is possible if the right opportunity comes along, and said that it might make more sense to wait a while before moving into developing countries like China. "In some of the major emerging economies such as India and China one could argue that it's much better to enter five years or 10 years down the road when that guest is becoming more affluent, better educated, because that is more in sync with our strategy," he told analysts.
