business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Sacramento Business Journal reports that Tesco – already planning to open stores in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada – has begun the process of looking for possible sites in California’s state capital.

Tesco, the UK-based retailer, is coming to the US west coast with stores that it is defining as “convenience stores,” and that will operate under the “Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market” banner. However, the broad expectation is that Tesco’s stores will be unlike any c-stores currently operating in the US, and will resemble though not replicate the Tesco Express stores it operates in Britain.
KC's View:
We’re just guessing here, but we expect that Tesco has a lot of realtors working for it in a number of markets, such as Denver, Seattle, and the San Francisco Bay Area. We also wouldn’t be surprised if it had people on the ground in places like Chicago, because if this thing works it is likely to gain a lot of momentum.
