business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Kroger Co. said late last week that its policy is to assure that all its stores provide legal medications to consumers, regardless of the personal views of its pharmacists. If a pharmacist objects to any specific medication, the store must "make accommodations to have that prescription filled for our customer."

In a prepared statement, Kroger said: “"If, for whatever reason, an individual pharmacist objects to furnishing this or any other medication, our policy is to find a way to accommodate the customer. We are taking additional steps to make certain that all of pharmacy teams have a clear understanding of this policy."

"We believe that medication is a private patient matter," Meghan Glynn, a Kroger spokeswoman, added. "Our role as a pharmacy operator is to furnish medication in accordance with the doctor's prescription or as requested by a patient."

MNB reported on Friday that Kroger ran headlong into the same controversy that affected Wal-Mart not too long ago – one of its pharmacists refused to dispense the “morning after” contraceptive pill, despite the fact that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the pill to be available without a prescription. The pill does, however, have to be handed out by a pharmacist to prevent its use by people under age 18. The event took place in Rome, Georgia, and pro-choice activists have called on Kroger to guarantee that the pill is available at all its pharmacies, regardless of the personal preferences of individual pharmacists. Critics, however, say that the pill encourages promiscuity and is tantamount to abortion.
KC's View:
We feel sorry for the woman who tried to secure the Plan B pill, and who now has to defend herself in the media for making a personal, even intimate decision. For the record, she is a 42-year-old married mother of two – hardly a poster child for wanton and immoral promiscuity.

Not surprisingly, there were plenty of emails on this subject after we reported it on Friday. Check them out in “Your Views”…
