business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Winnipeg Sun has an interesting story about an employer there that “tried to impose a two-tiered wage system on its unionized office staff last month and backed off only after employees agreed to a four-year wage freeze, following a bitter, five-week strike.” In addition, management “suggested it would start cutting staff and has already fired one worker who was on the picket line -- a move workers say is pure intimidation.

“The union representing the workers is threatening to take the employer to the Manitoba Labour Board.”

Here’s the kicker – the employer in question is United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832, and its president, Robert Ziegler, just got a nice cost-of-living wage increase.

There’s a metaphor in here somewhere about the goose and the gander…and how someone is getting plucked.
