• McDonald’s announced on Friday that it plans to expand the availability of its espresso-based specialty coffees, and hopes to have them available nationally “in the relatively near future.” McDonald's USA Chief Marketing Officer Bill Lamar tells Reuters that he views Starbucks and Caribou Coffee as direct competitors for this business, but that he thinks McDonald’s is more likely to expand the coffee business than to steal business from those two coffee specialists.

• The Washington Post reports that a new joint venture of Maryland-based Fordham Brewing and Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis – called Coastal Brewing – has acquired Old Dominion Brewing, and will market “Old Dominion and Fordham brands, including Dominion Ale, Dominion Lager, Oak Barrel Stout, Fordham Copperhead, Fordham Lager, and Oyster Stout.”
