business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Beacon Journal reports this morning that Ahold-owned Tops Markets has decided to close six stores in Northeast Ohio, a move that could eliminate as many as 390 jobs.

The units are slated to be closed before February 12.

The company attributed the decision to the fact that the stores have been underperforming for some time.

Including in the closings list is an Akron store that the Journal describes as “an exciting prototype for the chain with less square footage than the typical Tops store, a gas station and a streamlined floor plan.”
KC's View:
Nobody should be surprised to see all the Ahold companies clearing away anything remotely seen as dead wood. It seems critical for Ahold-owned companies to almost ignore all the various investigations and probes, and focus on the day-to-day tasks at hand…and that probably includes streamlining the company’s operations as much as possible.
