business news in context, analysis with attitude

Interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal about how gift cards – which have become an enormous industry, generating an estimated $55 billion in sales last year – also have created another, subsidiary business.

There are, apparently, a number of sites that, often for a fee, specialize in allowing people to sell or trade gift cards that they don’t want.

Beyond eBay, which allows people to sell virtually everything and anything, there also are specialized sites such as Swapagift.com and CardAvenue.com. And while there is no way to judge exactly how big a market the secondary gift card business is, the WSJ noted that are were nearly 8,000 gift cards posted for sale on eBay just the other day.
