Outgoing US Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman has confirmed that despite the new case of mad cow disease identified in Canada, she did not foresee any circumstances that would delay a March 7planned opening of US borders to Canadian live cattle under 30 months of age.

Veneman said that USDA is convinced that current safeguards are adequate to the task of preventing the spread of mad cow into the US. The border was closed to Canadian cattle in May 2003 after a case of mad cow was first discovered in Canada.
