business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Cincinnati Business Courier reports on how Bigg’s – which was operating supercenters years before Wal-Mart – is facing up to new competition from…Wal-Mart, as well as from the likes of Costco and Target.

Bigg’s has been in business for more than two decades and is owned by Supervalu, currently operates a dozen stores, with a thirteenth scheduled to open later this year. But the Courier notes that because of increased competition, the company is re-examining its approach – focusing on value as opposed to just price.

This means paying more attention to service and fresh foods, expanding the selection in areas such as wine and organics.
KC's View:
Seems to us that it is pretty dicey to depend on low prices these days as a magnet for consumers – especially since there are so many folks out there trying the same approach. You have to be competitive, but it is critical to have something else with which to lure consumers.
