business news in context, analysis with attitude

Wal-Mart said yesterday that it will match all donations made to the Salvation Army at its more than 3,600 stores this holiday season up to $1 million.

The move is in contrast to the policy enacted by Target, which along with a number of other retailers decided to ban the Salvation Army and other charities from soliciting outside its stores this year. While Wal-Mart has a no soliciting policy, it reportedly decided to allow its managers to make exceptions for select nonprofits.
KC's View:
While we understand that there were good legal reasons to ban all solicitation, we salute Wal-Mart’s decision to make exceptions in the case of appropriate charities. Good business, and just plain good.
