A new study from Northwestern University suggests that when immigrants come to America, the odds are pretty good that eventually they are going to gain weight. According to the report, once these immigrants are in the US for 10 years and have become assimilated into American culture and eating habits, they start to gain weight at a rate that increases their body mass index to the point where they become obese.

Just living in America and eating more processed foods means that immigrant males tend to gain 11 pounds and immigrant females gain nine pounds.

So much for the benefits of American cuisine.

Though to be fair, it isn’t just our lousy food. It’s also the fact that immigrants apparently exercise a lot less here than in their home countries, becoming addicted to motorized transportation and the life of a couch potato.

God bless America.
