business news in context, analysis with attitude

It was just a week ago that Dunkin’ Donuts announced that it was introducing reloadable cards that would allow people to buy versions ranging from $5 to $100, use them to buy doughnuts and coffee, and then recharge it at retail locations.

And yesterday, MNB received this email:

“Krispy Kreme is delighted to offer Krispy Kreme Cards in all our U.S. retail stores and online. Reloadable spending cards that can be used to purchase all our doughnut varieties, collectibles, and our entire beverage line including Signature Coffees and Frozen Blends, Krispy Kreme Cards are great for gifts or as a treat for yourself. A fun, fast, and convenient gift for college students away at school, people who don’t like carrying cash, and people who love coffee and doughnuts!

“The Krispy Kreme Card can be purchased at any U.S. Krispy Kreme retail store or on-line at www.krispykreme.com…

It’s just too easy…

Best we can tell, one of the differences between Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme is that the latter actually allows you to check your card balance online…which is a great feature. In addition, Dunkin’ Donuts only seems to have card readers at select locations in New England, while Krispy Kreme’s is national.

That said, just seems prudent to always have fully loaded Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts cards – and a Starbucks card for good measure - in our wallet all the time. Just in case.
