Published reports say that Safeway is still reeling from the extended Southern California grocery strike that ended almost 10 months ago, fallout from which is expected to reduce its 2005 earnings.

However, the company also said that it plans to spend about $1.4 billion for capital expenditures next year, open 30 to 35 new stores and remodel 275 to 285 units.
