Published reports say that Pathmark Stores is considering a break-up of the company that would result in it being sold in pieces, which management believes may be more possible than a sale of the entire entity.

The 142-store company has been mulling a sale, but is at a disadvantage because it has been hurt by competition.

John Catsimatidis, CEO of Red Apple Group, says he is not pursuing a deal at present.
