  • Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard reported second quarter net earnings that were the equivalent of $42.9 million (US), almost double its earnings from a year before. Sales for the quarter were $2 billion (US), up from $786 million during the same period a year ago.

  • Sainsbury reported half-year sales that were the equivalent of $15.5 billion (US), up 3.5 percent from the same period a year ago, but profits that plummeted 64.2 percent to $244 million (US). The retailer blamed competitive price cuts for the drop in profit.

  • Longs Drug said it earned $6.2 million in the third quarter, compared to $5.2 million in the year-ago period. Sales rose 1.3 percent to $1.10 billion.
