To celebrate its hundredth birthday, the HEB grocery chain in Texas donated one million pounds of food to 18 food banks in Texas, in what was said to be the single largest one-day donation in history.

"We've become more than just a donor (to the cause). We've become an advocate and a resource for the whole movement," Charles Butt, chairman/ CEO of the chain, told the Houston Chronicle. "We really believe in this. It's just not right for American families in today's world to not have food on their table."

The food was distributed to food banks throughout the state via planes donated by Southwest Airlines, HEB’s partner in the effort.
KC's View:
Better to give than to receive. Kudos to HEB, not just for 100 years of being one of the best supermarket chains in the country, but for demonstrating the true nature of generosity.
