The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sanctioned the “qualified health claim” by marketers that the monosaturated fat in olive oil can reduce the chance of suffering from heart disease.

FDA says that there is “limited but not conclusive evidence” that consuming two tablespoons of olive oil a day – as long as total calorie consumption does not go up – cuts the likelihood that a person will contract coronary heart disease.

The ruling could lead marketers to change the labels on olive oil containers.
