business news in context, analysis with attitude

CNN reports that Hooters, known for chicken wings and scantily clad waitresses, will open its first unit in China next week, in the city of Shanghai. It is the first of as many as 10 Hooters expected to be opened in China over the next few years.

The store opening is, CNN notes, “the clearest signal to date that China has made the leap from emerging economy to a global powerhouse.”

Hooters has plans to open several locations in India next year, and already has units in Singapore, Taiwan, Chile and Austria. The company also has an airline.
KC's View:
It was just a few weeks ago that it was revealed that China has more obese people than the US, and suggested that this is because of the imposition of American fast food on the Chinese culture.

Who knows what they’ll blame us for now that Hooters is there?
