  • German consumers may soon have the ability to go shopping after 8 pm and on Sundays, as one house of the nation’s legislature has backed a law allowing for liberalized shopping hours.

    While the changes have been pushed for by both retailers and some consumers, there are critics that say the changes won’t grow sales and will hurt employees’ personal lives.


  • PlanetRetail.net reports that venture capital group Permira may be planning to make a $1.9 billion (US) bid to acquire Sainsbury, while at the same time top management at the retailer is considering eliminating both jobs and stores in order to put its financial house in order.


  • German discounter Aldi reportedly plans to expand its fleet o=f units in Ireland to 80 over the next year and a half, with store openings planned at the rate of one-a-week between now and the end of the year.
