  • Possibly illustrating an interest in becoming more of a player in the computer business, Wal-Mart has begun selling a $600 laptop with wireless capability.

    Right now, the computer only is available online. But analysts believe that the test presages a more aggressive move into the PC market by Wal-Mart, probably with cheap, imported entry-level machines at hard-to-resist prices.

  • LI>As expected, Wal-Mart Stores reportedly is making a bid to help sponsor the bailout of troubled Japanese retailer Daiei. Terms of the offer – which likely will compete with bids from other companies, including Ito-Yokado – were not disclosed. However, it was reported that Wal-Mart would like to leave Daiei’s mix of general merchandise and food in place, while other companies would like to convert the company to a pure supermarket chain.
