Mitchell Goldstein, senior VP and CFO at the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), told an investment conference this week that the company could convert as many as 80 of its 400 conventional stores to the Food basics value format that it has been using at 25 US locations and has used to great effect in Canada.

Such a shift would take place over several years, and represent 20 percent of its fleet. In Canada, close to half of the company’s stores are Food Basics units.
