business news in context, analysis with attitude

The National Institute on Drug Abuse has released a report saying that people get addicted to food the same way they get addicted to drugs.

A brain scan of people while they were smelling their favorite foods showed that they react the same way as cocaine addicts do when they are craving their next fix.
KC's View:
Since roughly a third of the population is obese, this study certainly suggests that how these people are treated needs to take into account the nature of addiction. In other words, it isn’t just a matter of lack of self control or weak character, but possibly a very real physical and psychological addiction.

In other words, maybe we need an institute that combines the best attributes of Betty Crocker and Betty Ford.
