  • Visa International said yesterday that for the first time the use of debit cards worldwide in 2003 outpaced that of credit cards in terms of volume.

    The company said global Visa debit-card volume reached $1.48 trillion at the end of 2003, up 17 percent from the previous year, while Visa credit-card volume worldwide increased 5 percent to $1.45 trillion.


  • The Red Apple c-store chain, with units in Virginia and North Carolina, has announced that it will use “RFID technology to track customer purchases and dole out rewards,” according to a report by Colloquy.com, which also noted that the program “uses an audio speaker system to broadcast customized messages to members as they stand at the pump.”

    Rewards are in the form of store merchandise or fuel.
