business news in context, analysis with attitude

American City Business Journals reports that Longs Drug Stores is undertaking "significant organizational and operational changes" in order to deal with heightened competition.

"The competitive landscape is changing in many of the markets in which we do business," Longs said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). "Other large retail drug store chains and mass merchandisers are expanding in our markets, and we are facing increased competition from non-traditional channels such as the Internet and mail-order pharmacies."

Among the efforts: streamlining headquarters and store staffing, employing financial incentives for store employees, use of wireless computers in stores to process drugs, remodeling aging units, and cutting prices on some 2,000 “high volume” items.
