  • The Food Institute reports that sales at the nation's grocery stores (consisting mainly of supermarkets) totaled $38.6 billion during March, up 3.3% from 2003. This brought cumulative 2004 grocery store sales to $113.7 billion, 4.7 percent more than a year earlier.

    Sales at all food and beverage stores during the month totaled $42.6 billion, up 3.7 percent from a year ago.

    At the same time, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food at home advanced 0.2 percent from February during March, bringing the food at home inflation rate to 3.8 percent for the first quarter of 2004 – higher than the 1.8 percent overall CPI increase for the same period.


  • Weis Markets Chairman Robert F. Weis has informed shareholders that the company plans to invest $92.7 million in its growth and expansion program. There are 28 store projects on the agenda, including five new superstores, the expansion of nine units and the remodel of 14 others.
