Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, introduced legislation yesterday that would immediately remove barriers to consumers who want to import inexpensive prescription drugs from Canada.

''If lower-cost pharmaceuticals are made available to Americans, drug companies will be forced to rethink their pricing strategy and won't be able to gouge consumers in the United States," Grassley said.

To this point, the Bush administration has opposed such legislation, as has the drug manufacturing industry.
