  • Costco Wholesale Corp. said total sales for the five-week period ended April 4 reached $4.41 billion, up 14 percent from a year earlier. Same-store sales were up 11 percent for the period.

  • Rite Aid announced that sales for the four weeks ended March 27 rose 5.6 percent to $1.29 billion. Same-store sales were up 5.9 percent for the period, while pharmacy same-store sales also increased 5.9 percent. Front-end same-store sales rose 6 percent.

  • Ito-Yokado reportedly has fallen out of the top spot among Japanese retailers. For the fiscal year ended February 29, Ito-Yokado had sales that were the equivalent of $33.23 billion, up 0.3 percent from the previous year…allowing Aeon to pass it with $33.26 billion (US) in annual sales.

  • Carrefour reported first quarter sales that were the equivalent of $22.9 billion (US), a 4.3 percent increase from year-earlier figures. Sales in France, the company's home market, were off 1.1 percent during the quarter, while outside the country its sales were up 7.8 percent in Europe, 10.1 percent in Latin America, and 22.1 percent in Asia.

  • Longs Drug Stores reported that total sales for the five-week period ended April 1 were $444 million, up 6.5 percent compared with $417.1 million for the comparable period a year ago. March same-store sales were up 3.6 percent.
