The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that Unilever Bestfoods is reaching out to Hispanic customers by helping them register to vote. In Miami, the paper reports, the company recently sponsored a tent at a Hispanic festival that offered both food stalls and a booth that was registering new voters and teaching them how to use an electronic ballot machine.

"Unilever plans to take its get-out-the-vote campaign to 12 more Hispanic festivals in cities across the country by September, including Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago," WSJ reports. "Combined attendance at those events usually hits 3.5 million."

Critics of the practice say that Unilever is "polluting" the system by introducing a commercial entity into the voter registration process.
KC's View:
While we suppose that Unilever could be in the position to influence how people vote when it registers them, we think, in general, that anything encouraging democracy is a good thing.

It's also appropriate that the first voter registration effort by Unilever took place in Florida…which has a certain questionable reputation about its voting practices.
