business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Gwinnett Daily Post reports on the decision by Kroger to build a new 70,000 sq. ft. superstore down the street from where a new Wal-Mart Supercenter is being built - the second time this year that Kroger has decided to open a unit in close proximity to a new Wal-Mart.

In each of these cases, Kroger will close down an older store in favor of a newer, bigger, and arguably more competitive location.
KC's View:
The Daily Post quoted an industry source of exceptional wit and insight as saying that “Kroger knows if it’s going to compete with the Supercenters, it’s got to bring its A-game. If it can’t renovate and expand its current store, it’s going to build a new one with all the bells and whistles.”

(Okay, the source was us. You caught us. We were just kidding about the "exceptional wit and insight" bit…)

But that happens to be what we think. Kroger continues to impress us as a company that is playing offense, not defense.
