The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that JC Penney is in discussions to split its Eckerd drugstore chain, selling off pieces to CVS and Canada's Jean Coutu Group.

Such a move would almost certainly increase the total price that Penney would get for the division. The company reportedly has been offered in the neighborhood of $4 billion for the division, which it bought for $2.5 billion in 1996. But Penney wants more.
