The Washington Post reports that both Safeway and Ahold-owned Giant Food have begun negotiating with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, which represents some 18,000 workers in the capitol region.

The workers' contract expires on March 27.

The chains reportedly have proposed that "new employees would get less pay for working Sundays and holidays and fewer vacation days. Safeway and Giant have not yet disclosed their plan on the more contentious issues of health care, pensions and overall wage levels."
