Published reports say that scientists in the European Union are meeting to consider whether a Monsanto-developed genetically modified corn should be permitted inside its borders, ending a five-year moratorium on such biotech products.

The scientists are caught between two pressure groups - a bloc of EU consumer groups that prefer to keep the ban on genetically modified organisms in place, and nations (primarily the US) that have challenged the ban in protests filed with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
