  • Wal-Mart reported that January sales reached $18.4 billion, up 14.3 percent from a year earlier. Same-store sales in the US were up 5.7 percent.

  • Target Corp. posted a 5.1 percent gain in January same-store sales, and a total sales increase for the month reached $3.06 billion, up 11.9 percent from a year earlier.

  • Family Dollar Stores posted January sales that were up 12.5 percent to about $339.8 million. Same-store sales were up three percent.

  • Longs Drug Stores reported that January same-store sales rose 2.4 percent, and same-store pharmacy sales increased 2.9 percent.

    Longs also said that quarterly same-store sales were up 2.2 percent, and total quarterly sales were $1.23 billion, a rise of 4.8 percent from a year ago.
