The new edition of Retail Intelligence's European Retail Rankings says that Tesco has grown to become the second-ranked supermarket chain in Europe, overtaking Intermarche.

France's Carrefour chain remains number one, solidified by its acquisition of Promodes. Ahold, through acquisition, moved from 20th place to 13th.

The rankings say that Wal-Mart is number 12, and it has been a struggle to hold that position because of its struggles in Germany. Retail Intelligence suggests that the company needs to make additional European acquisitions if it is to achieve any kind of critical mass.
