The Associated Press reports this morning that expectations are that beer volume is being hurt by an increase in the consumption of hard liquor, with beer consumption roughly stagnant as spirits consumption going up as much as three percent.

While beer still represents a much bigger part of US total liquor volume - almost 85 percent, vs. less than five percent for spirits - it is perceived in the industry as a troubling phenomenon, driven in part by the fact that there is a broader marketing of hard liquor to what is referred to by some as a "cocktail culture."
