  • That the US Department of Agriculture has issued a report noting that conventional supermarkets now sell more organic food than any other type of retailer, including natural food stores? Growth if organic sales has been 20 percent or more each year since 1990, organic dairy has been the fastest growing segment, organic produce is the top seller, and almost three-quarters of all conventional supermarkets carry some organic products.

  • That, according to the 2002 Food Industry Distribution Center Benchmarking Report released by Food Distributors International and the Food Marketing Institute at the 2002 Food Industry Productivity Convention & Exposition, 27 percent of food-distribution centers are reporting less volume than a year ago? There’s good news, though, as costs at the nation’s food distribution centers continue to fall. So even if the food industry is selling less, it is doing so more efficiently.

  • That the Dole Food Co. has rejected a bid by CEO David Murdock to take the company private for about $1.26 billion, plus the assumption of $1.24 billion in debt? Two options are being explored by the board: getting Murdock to pay more, or sell the company to somebody else.

  • That Raley’s Supermarkets in Northern California is still facing the possibility of a strike by its pharmacists? The Sacramento Bee reports that the union failed to ratify a new contract. The chain reportedly has filed suit to force a settlement, which it thought it had reached with the union back in September.
